Rainbow trout - Oostvoorne

General information

The environment

Fishing the Oostvoornse Salt Lake is an extraordinary fishing experience in Europe, where salmonids fight like sea fish ! On first thought, The Netherlands might not sound like a complete change of scene for a fishing trip, but all fishermen who have shared this fishing experience with us loved it and decided to come back to this amazing spot on a regular basis. Oostvoornse Salt Lake covers an expanse of about 650 acres. It is located within an ornithological reserve near Oostvoorne. Oostvoorne is a small Dutch coastal village, located about 35 km West of the city of Rotterdam, facing one of the world’s largest harbours. Made up of dunes, groves, bushes and colourful flowers, the reserve has a natural beauty which overshadows and contrasts with the highly industrial surrounding environment. And at dusk, the landscape gets even more surreal when the lake is illuminated by the harbour’s chimneys. And for those interested in ornithology, dozens of migratory birds can be seen by the lake.

The fish

The estimated Salt Lake’s brown and rainbow trouts population is about
10 000 specimens. The lake’s clear and lightly salted waters are particularly rich in food. As a result, the fish growing rate is unusually high, about 2 cm per month, and they end up with an amazing size, 70 cm long or above. Their fighting spirit and their beauty make them look like Atlantic or Pacific migratory trouts.
